Serenity in Solitude

Serenity in Solitude

Death can be a scary experience, especially when feelings of loneliness seep in (both in those passing and in those left behind). In this picture, I've tried to depict a man in his last stage of living embraced by a gentle divine light and a compassionate angel invisible yet ever-present.

Eclipse of Destiny

Eclipse of Destiny

I view this piece as a follow up to my "Edge of the Sea" picture. I see this horse as one of the babies from "Edge of the Sea" now older and, despite their fears and uncertainties, intently and courageously pursuing the future they are meant for, forever watched over by a guiding horse spirit, perhaps the one from "Edge of the Sea" :)

Remembrance

Remembrance

In our lives we get so caught up in the future and the novel moments, we often forget to look back at the prequels of our lives, where we came from, what battles were fought, and what struggles overcome to allow us the chance at this life that we possess. In this picture (taken from a photo with lighting and shading altered), I have tried to convey a noble forgotten story coming forth from darkness, never to be lost in the shades of time.

Edge of the Sea

Edge of the Sea

The sea always had a magical effect on me. Imagine gazing onto a vast ocean with no knowledge of what lies beyond. A seemingly limitless expanse where earth becomes one with the sky, a boundless potential where any dream, hope, or thought could seem real. In this piece, two baby horses are reunited with their departed loved one, while to the right of them three distant birds fly off in a united dream.

Grasping Grace

Grasping Grace

Her face bares the marks and engravings of the pain she has endured and the tears she has never wept. However, in something as simple as calm, warm sunlight does she find the beauty, meaning, and wonder in life for which she has always yearned.

A Memory of Love

A Memory of Love

When I started sketching this picture, my little fur sister, Chloe, had but 4 days left to live. Lying with her in our last moments together, I found myself lost in countless memories of our time with each other- tiny specks in time that will span the entirety of a life. How extraordinary that one small memory can hold such lasting power. This picture is meant to display a tender moment recalled amidst a "forest of memories".

Goddess Within

Goddess Within

For this picture I tried to depict an African lady of high status that had been subjected to a life of slavery (noted by the scars on her back). Despite her unfortunate turn in life, her pose and her jewelry symbolize her unbreakable and impenetrable spirit. Circumstances cannot identify her true identity- only she can.

Forest of Pain and Understanding

Forest of Pain and Understanding

In this piece, a traumatized girl sits on a deck overlooking a metaphorical pond of the many others who have drowned in similar grief and agony. Behind her is a sympathetic forest housing many fairies and a nature spirit (face to her left) that understand her pain and long to reach out to her. If only she would look around instead of into the murky depths below...

"Where do I belong" she ponders

"Where do I belong" she ponders

This piece has two meanings I meant to express. The original theme was to show a "Gatsby-esque" dream of a lady in poverty seeking escape from her dire situation (the mirror representing her tragic wish, clothed in the finest silks in her reflection while in reality wearing rags- a dove flying to symbolize her wish to fly away). The other possible theme is that of a unhappy bride that is reconciling a bleak reality with the dreams and ideals of her heart. However you wish to take it!

Reflections in Time

Reflections in Time

Often in our ambitious endeavors in life we misplace the things we will cherish most in the coming years- the little precious moments . It's the memories we collect, the chapters that we write, the connections we form, and the truths we seek that will speak to us long after our senses and neighbors have gone silent.

In this piece, an elderly lady gazes on an old photo of herself and a lost love, holding the locket/necklace she wears in the photo.

Eyes to Eternity

Eyes to Eternity

I originally thought of titling this piece as a muse of some sort; after all, the lady looks eerily similar to the angel in "Serenity in Solitude"...Yet, I thought to myself, "What is a muse". A muse doesn't have to be a person, a thing, or an environment. Each person has a muse, and that muse is scattered through all the hidden bits and pieces of a "boring, drab life". It's only when we learn to view the world around us with infinite curiosity and wonder that our muse comes to life. So relax, smell a flower, and try to live a little, if but for one minute in an hour :)

Bombing of Dresden, 1945

Bombing of Dresden, 1945

Based on a true historical incident from WWII, this piece depicts the tender love shared between a small brother and sister born into a hostile world and horrific circumstance. The fragility and coldness of the window and room is countered by the unbreakable spirit and warm bond they share.

Friends of the Forgotten

Friends of the Forgotten

In this picture, six angels/fairies visit and take care of graves that appear dilapidated, weathered, and seemingly forgotten. Even in the loneliest and creepiest parts and aspects of the world can light shine.

A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember

Wheat fields have a wide and varied range of symbolism. My favorites are that they symbolize not only selfless love but also the cycle of rebirth- the ending of one chapter and the beginning of another, the carrying of stories across generations and borders, and the circular continuance of life. In this picture, a boy and his grandmother take a lasting walk on a path to such fields.

Gaia

Gaia

This picture was meant to show a personification of nature, of "Mother Earth" if you will. Many wrinkles symbolize the eons of wisdom and knowledge she's gathered while observing, giving, and keeping balance. Her eyes show not only the pain and suffering she has likewise endured, but the clearness symbolizes the purity of selfless love that she bestows to all.

Heaven's Littlest Angels

Heaven's Littlest Angels

As a nurse my mom worked for many years with children that had cancer. She would often tell me many stories of these uniquely beautiful souls, and while their years here weren't long, they have inspired me in ways words cannot express. This is my tribute to them, showing them in their most true form.

Portrait of Mom

Portrait of Mom

Nurse, caregiver, gardener, encyclopedia of classical and English literature, a scary NY Yankees fan, a purveyor of justice and law, and a mom of me and countless fur babies and woodland creatures :)

Woman of Letters

Woman of Letters

A lady sits writing at her desk. As elegant and prepossessing as she may be, it is for her mind- her knowledge, wisdom, and wit- that she wishes to leave her mark on the world.

Waiting and Wondering

Waiting and Wondering

Tried to combine three styles in this: abstract for the window, realism for the lady, and minimalism for her dress). I feel like I was having a moment, but kind people said nice things about it, so here you go ;)

WIP- "Love's Longing"

WIP- "Love's Longing"

Not finished with this one yet. Love it, but not sure what direction to further take it...mysterious letter on a desk in the background, melancholic gazing at a rose on a balcony, how can I make this more sappy ;)

The Journey

The Journey

The quiet wisdom of two adult wolves and the playful curiosity of two wolf pups. A journey running parallel, a journey never ending.

Nikki

Nikki

Portrait of my muse, Miranda, with her fur baby, Nikki, who passed on to become an angel last year. Nikki blessed so many lives in so many ways during her time here, and now she'll continue spreading her pure, bright love beyond, forever and always shining upon us.

The picture in the background states "Affection is Timeless, Devotion is Ageless, Love is Forever". Thank you for everything you brought and will continue to bring to us, Nikki.

Will and Nikki

Will and Nikki

A followup to my previous piece, "Nikki and Miranda", Will is Miranda's brother and, as Miranda stated, was Nikki's best friend and favorite. Miranda shared many stories with me, funny and touching, that showcased how beautiful, strong, and special the bond was between Will and Nikki. A funny one of those stories is evidenced here in this suspenseful tug of war.
